Sept. 11 pictures

When September 11 happened, it hardly felt like a historical event. It didn't seem weird that I saw the sky fill with dust; everyone around me saw the same thing. Even three years later, its full impact hasn't hit me. The event felt, and still feels, surreal. I could write a sentimental post like, "Let's honor the victims of 9/11," but I don't feel anything. The truth is, I'm exploiting the anniversary to share pictures that wouldn't be suitable any other day of the year. So here we are...

The infamous Twin Tower dust cloud, as seen from the Farm (an apartment on 4 St. and 6 Ave.) on the afternoon of Sept. 11.

My friend Jenn Yu looks on.

A store window on Canal St. displays hand-written notes.

From a makeshift memorial at Union Square Park.

Chalk "grafitti" in Union Square Park.

Windows near the WTC were so dusty that you could write through them. Unfortunately, this was one of the first rolls of film I ever developed, hence the cloudy right half of the image.

The Twin Tower commemoration lights shoot into the sky, as seen from East Broadway in February 2002.
